Glossary – General Occult Arts Terms
Affirmation
Also known as positive affirmation, this is a concise statement describing a personal goal or wish.
Amulet
A protective device worn around the neck or hung from the door or window of a sacred space or home. The words “ amulets,” “charms” and talismans’ tend to be used interchangeably.
Astrology
A form of divination based on the position of the planets, moon, and sun at the time of a person’s birth.
Aura
A form of psychic energy expressed as layers of rainbowlike colors that surround the physical body; they range in depth and form, depending on a person’s emotional and physical state.
Charm
A magical word or words that can be used as protection.
Chinese horoscope
A form of divination based on the particular year in which we were born.
Circle
A sacred space, usually thought of as a sphere of energy created when the circle is cast, which is done by imagining a blue line of energy separating the everyday world from a person’s safe space “between the worlds”
Clairaudience
The ability to hear words, sentences or names transmitted from the spirit world or your higher self.
Clairvoyance
The ability to visualize images, situations, or symbols transmitted from the spirit world or your higher self.
Creative Visulatization
An active meditation in which we focus on images or feelings in order to move beyong our limitations and current beliefs
Divination
A catch-all phrase used to refer to the myriad techniques of trying to foretell the future by interpreting signs, visions, images or patterns seen in the stars ( astrology ), numbers ( numerology), cards (tarot and playing cards), dice,water (water scrivening), the lines on a person’s pam ( palmistry), stones ( stone casting) or tea leaves or coffee grounds (hydromancy)
Extrasensory Perception (ESP)
This is often called the sixth sense.
Grounding
Connecting the body’s energy to that of the earth.
Guardian Angel
An energy form that is devoted to helping guide you through life by increasing your awareness of your higher self.
Intuition
Another word for nonintellectual reasoning: the ability to receive energy in the form of feelings or “vibes” that cause you to “know” something significant about a person, event or place.
Invoke
To summon a spirit or energy form into oneself
Meditation
A relaxation or spiritual technique used to help you still your mind so that you can tap into your higher self or a higher consciousness.
Numerology
A form of divination using numbers to learn about your personality and path in life.
Palmistry
Also known as chiromancy; palmistry is a form of divination based on the lines of a person’s palm and the shape of a person’s hand and fingers.
Pendulum
A stone or metal weight that is tied to the end of a piece of string or a length of chain.
Psychic
A person who is able to accurately predict world or local events or see into the secrets and intimate experiences of people they have never met before.
Psychic circle

Psychic Shields
Psychic forms of protection that help screen a person from many forms of negative energy.
Psychic space
A special area that you set aside for practicing and developing your psychic abilities.
Psychic work
Any concentrated form of psychic activity that involves the intuition, including fortune-telling and spell craft.
Psychic workshops
Places of learning that help students develop their psychic abilities.
Psychometry
The ability to pshychically derive information about a person from his or her personal property, such as jewelry or clothing
Runes
Magical symbols that were first used by ancient Nordic and Germanic cultures and are still used for divination.
Scrivening or Scrying
A form of divination using reflective surfaces such as a crystal ball, water, ice, mirrors or smoke from a fire.
Spell Craft
A technique used to cast spells for a particular purpose or to find an answer to a particular question.
Spirit Guide
An energy form that can help guide a person toward a state of higher consciousness.
Stone casting
A form of divination where semiprecious or precious stones are used to reveal the future.
Talisman
An object charged to attract a specific magical energy. Normally this talisman correspond with a particular celestial body and should be made on the day of the week that resonates with that celestial body.
Tarot
A deck of specially designed cards that are used as a form of divination. The deck contains 78 cards and is divided into the Major Arcana of 22 cards and the Minor Arcana of 56 cards. The Minor Arcada is further divided into four groups representing the four elements of earth, air, fire and water.
Telepathy
The ability to deliberately send thoughts to and/or receive thoughts from a person.
Universal Subsconscious
A form of higher energy believed to contain the sum of our innate knowledge.
Wax Reading
A technique for reading the future from the shapes and symbols that form when hot wax is slowly dripped into a bowl of water.
Zodiac
A collective term referring to the tweleve astrological signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquaries and Pisces.
